Alli
Orlistat, Xenical
Alli Review
Alli, the over-the-counter version of the FDA-approved fat blocker formerly known as Xenical.
The Alli diet pill itself is a reduced strength version of the prescription weight loss drug Xenical (also known as Orlistat) which has an impressive safety record, and encouraging clinical trial results. Prescription-strength Xenical contains 120 milligrams while Alli contains 60 milligrams.
In the original trials of Xenical it was shown that when used in conjunction with a traditional weight loss program, the treatment resulted in an average loss of 12.4 pounds over 6 months.
Alli - How it work
Alli blocks about 25% of the fat you eat. Typically, enzymes in your intestines break down fat from food so your body can absorb the fat. But, the active ingredient in Alli attaches to some of these enzymes and prevents them from digesting about a quarter of the fat you eat. Because undigested fat can't be absorbed, it passes out of your body instead of turning into calories.
Alli only works on enzymes that break down fat, not on other enzymes. So carbohydrates and proteins are not affected. You still absorb those nutrients. But, since fat grams have more than twice as many calories as carbs and proteins, Alli capsules work on the worst offenders - the calorie-dense fat grams.
Alli - How To Take
For overweight adults 18 and older, take 1 Alli capsule with each meal containing fat. Use with a reduced calorie, low-fat diet and exercise program until you reach your weight loss goal. Most weight loss occurs in the first 6 months.
Alli Possible Side Effects
While there may be some side effects to Alli, where users persist in continuing with a high fat diet, these effects are easy to control. The drug is shown to reduce fat intake by some 25%, although due to the fact that some of the fatty content is not processed and remains untreated in the body, it will be excreted by the user.
In low or reduced fat diets this is not a major concern, however if a high fat diet is followed then the increased “wastage” fatty content may cause irregular bowel movement, and unusual stools - all harmless, but potentially uncomfortable. It is recommended that users reduce their dietary fatty content to no more that 15 grams per meal.
