Obestat Review

Obestat capsules are sibutramine hydrochloride. Sibutramine hydrochloride is sold in the UK and Europe under the brand name Reductil - Sold under the brand name Meridia in the US. Obestat is made in India. Even though it contains the exact same chemical as Reductil/Meridia its cost is significantly less than that of Reductil/Meridia.

Obestat is indicated for the management of obesity, including weight loss and maintenance of weight loss, and should be used in conjunction with a reduced calorie diet. Obestat is recommended for obese patients with an initial body mass index > 30 kg/m2 or > 27 kg/m2 in the presence of other risk factors (e.g. hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia). Body mass index is calculated by taking the patient's weight, in kg, and dividing by the square of the height of the patient, in metres.

In one 12-month study, the average weight loss in patients taking Obestat, 10 mg daily, was about 10 lbs. and in those taking 15 mg daily was about 14 lbs. The average weight loss in persons on only a reduced calorie diet alone was 3 1/2 lbs. Thus, Obestat is proven effective therapy for the obese patient who needs to lose weight to decrease morbidity. Nonetheless, the magnitude of the weight loss will ultimately depend on the degree of concomitant caloric restriction and the concomitant use of a graded exercise program.

Obestat - How To Take

The recommended starting dose of Obestat is one 10mg capsule administered once daily with or without food. If there is inadequate weight loss (ie less than 2kg) after 4 weeks, the dose may be increased to one 15mg capsule once daily provided 10mg was well tolerated. Blood pressure and heart rate changes should be taken into account when deciding to increase the dose. In most of the clinical trials, Obestat was given in the morning.

Obestat Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to sibutramine
  • Patients receiving monoamine oxidase inhibitors
  • Patients taking other centrally acting appetite suppressant drugs
  • Major eating disorder (anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa)

At least two weeks should elapse between discontinuation of an MAOI and initiation of treatment with sibutramine. Similarly, at least two weeks should elapse between discontinuation of sibutramine and an MAOI.
